Class Reflection

I remember the first day of class I walked in there not really knowing what to expert out of it. I just knew that I didn’t have clue about PR at all , I just signed up for the class because I thought it would be interesting and a new experience for me. This semester has literally gone by in a blink of an eye, it has always amazed me how fast time really goes by when you are not focusing on it. I have learned so much in this short time. One thing that i have learned about PR is how to write a press release and fact sheet before taking this class I had no idea what those even were let alone how to write them. I have also learned about PR campaigns and what goes into them for the client. I would have to say that my favorite part about taking this class is getting to have an amazing client like Lonnie for his amazing organization Team River Runner. I have to say that I am deeply saddened though that this semester has gone by so fast and that us as a a group have not gotten to do to much for the Team River Runner due to all the snow that we have had during this semester. I am glad that the semester isn’t quite over yet so we have one more shot to have an event for Team River Runner to get at least some donations for them. I have a new out look on what PR is because of this class and what goes behind a great well organized plan for the clients. It has made me realize that PR is not an easy job to have there are so many different aspects that goes into it.  I am so thankful that I decided to take this class because even though didn’t get to do much for Team River Runner and I am still taking away a lot of knowledge and feel more humbled by it.

Hashtag Epic Fail

I think that the organizations have been successful in using twitter to promote their products because a lot of the time the hashtag’s are usually trending either for a new item in the store or a new collection in the store.  Most of the time it helps people that are following the organizations be able to be informed quicker about new and upcoming items, it’s profitable for the organization because its an easier way for them to get the word out. A lot of the people are using social media like Twitter and its how the people stay up to date with the newest trends and in doing so gets the organizations more customers.  The Celeb Boutique saw that Aurora was trending so they decided to get on the bandwagon to promote Kim Kardashian’s  inspired Aurora dress, but it turns out that Aurora was only trending because of the horrific Dark Knight Rises mass shooting.  Celeb Boutique’s tweet was left up for about an hour they then  removed the tweet from its page, and posted the following apology claiming that the individual that posted the tweet was not based in the U.S. and, therefore, not aware of why #Aurora was trending in the first place. This was the exact apology that was said “We are incredibly sorry for our tweet about Aurora. Our PR is not US based and had not checked the reason for the trend. At that time, our social media was totally unaware of the situation and simply thought it was another trending topic. We have removed the very insensitive tweet, and will of course take more care in the future to look into what we say in our tweets. Again, we do apologize for any offense caused. This was not intentional and will not occur again. Our most sincere apologies for both the tweet and the situation.” I feel that this was a good save for the organization because the person that posted it was not based in the U.S. so that they were unaware about what was happening at the time. I feel that they did a good thing by realizing the tweet and taking them down and that they did apologize because of all the back lash that they got from the hashtag.

Follow The Plan

Susan G. Komen is an organization best known for its mission to fight breast cancer and get awareness to the community. They have raised  1.5 billion as of 2010 and are still continuing to this day their mission to destroy breast cancer. Two reasons for  Susan G. Komen’s downfall are the unnecessary self-inflicted crisis  that was caused by an action that contradicted the organizations specified mission.  Second was the result of the first problem, that it almost terminated  the organizations existence. Susan G. Komen the biggest breast cancer aid organization, in January 2012, spoke of a plan to cut financial aid to Planned Parenthood’s women’s health initiatives. The plan set off a wave of criticism and feedback. Social media had the first major reaction to the news then came mainstream media. This led to the organization being caught in a catch twenty-two whether it was pro choice or anti-abortion. The organizations communication efforts were weak and caused story to grow larger then it ever should have. Strategies that were implemented by the group were “naive” at best. The group had hoped by giving bureaucratic justifications as answers for this plan it would cover it up. The result was the opposite, support for the organization dropped tremendously and donations fell heavily. The only hope for them was to let the CEO Nancy Brinker and president Elizabeth Thompson step down from their positions. In turn media and social  networks stopped covering the story and let blame go towards management with poor decision making. The organizations fall from refinement wasn’t the result of a communications problem but in fact it was from the outcome of a procedure and a strategy problem. It was intensified by a vital error in reading the priorities of its contributors.  Many companies today have the same problem as Susan G. Komen did, they do not understand the proper methods of developing a procedure and running with it. If more companies would learn how to do this it could lend itself to less problems after a crisis has occurred.

Life In The Producer’s World

I decided to interview a good friend of mine. I haven’t met her in person but have talked to her online for four years now. She is someone that I look up to and admire she has come so far in her career as a producer. Candace Charee Basques is CEO and the founder of Frame 7 productions and she went to school at Heritage Academy. The first time that I even heard about Candace was at a Twilight Convention back in September of the year 2010, she was the entertainment at the Karaoke night she sang two of her new songs that she had been working on.  Unfortunately, I never really got to introduce myself to her until I got home and found her on Twitter and Facebook. We just started talking and have been ever since the convention. I conducted the interview over the phone because she lives in Mesa, Arizona.  It was very interesting to find out more about what she does in her career as a producer and how far she has grown in her career. A typical day for Candace usually consists of taking her son to school and getting her husband’s lunch ready for work. While they are off at school and work Candace is writing emails, making phone calls for her new project called Significance which is a movie/television show. She is not only a producer she is also a writer currently her and her husband are writing a novel together. She is still working on her music company that she is CEO of is her agency for everything that she does in her career. She has been working on her current project Significance for over a year now, this project is the one that she is most proud of. Significance is actually based on a best seller book series which has a total of four books in the series. Significance has a very well known cast with people such as Jeremy Sumpter who played Peter Pan in the movie Peter Pan and Michael Welch who played Mike Newton in Twilight. Candace has a Facebook fan page for Significance when she first started this page they only had 1,000 fans now they have 7,000 fans, she just makes it personal by offering prizes, and talking with the fans on the page and tell them more about the project. She has 3 or 5 interns that help run the page as much as possible.  She said the one thing that she wished she would of known before starting in her career was the movie industry. This is a field that I am most interested in pursuing in the future she gave me some tips for anyone wanting to be in this industry. Number one find a mentor someone that has done this before and you can learn the ropes from. Number two make connections and have business conversations. Number three go to every event be at the places where you know celebrities might be. Lastly, number four find a project that you are passionate about and toughen up be positive, don’t let negativity get to you.

How fast Memory Fades

In the year 2010 the Toyota company made an unethical error when they betrayed their promise by ignoring safety concerns and delaying recall investigations just so that they can save some money. The Toyota car company lost production and sales once the story hit national news. As the story started too die down production and sales rose. This shows us how Press Relations and media make all the difference in our corporate world today. I don’t believe values were hurt in the choices that were made by the company. The overall values were shown when the company held out recalling cars that they had known were defective. This shows the values of the Toyota company is in the profits  of shareholders and executives. Overall production and sales will stay the same until another media storm hits. They should have recalled the known vehicles that had brake problems. They should not of worried about their profits and worried more on generalized safety. They also could of done more research and development through product and safety. Reimbursing the families of victims could have been another option for them. In the long run organizations don’t have to worry about anything else then profits as long as you hold a good reputation and standing in your field.  This example can be shown with all major corporations and companies such as City Group, AIG, BP, Walmart, Dyncorp, Chevron, 3M, Apple, and Philip Morris. Even though we preach in classes today that ethics is one of the most important business models these businesses show how easily people forget the ethics that companies push aside everyday. So did this problem effect Toyota in anyway in the long term with customers. For those who have a memory yes it did, however for most of the world their memories faded just as soon as the story switched from Toyota to the next company who did something wrong.

How can we get more followers for our businesses

In today’s society we see more and more people using twitter especially for marketing businesses. Facebook is getting to be something of the past and twitter is the future. According to  Liau Yun Qing here are just a few tips to increase your twitter follower count

1. Be engaging
Instead of just creating an account, McMahon said businesses will need to participate more on Twitter by using functionalities such as retweets, mentions, topical conversation and hashtags.

She noted that she would follow a company’s twitter account if they tweet content that makes her laugh or think, links to her topics of interest or things she can use such as discount or online resources.

Guillermo Mata, co-CEO at New York-based Web Development Group, said he would follow a business on Twitter if it posts unique content and actually engages with other members.

2. Ensure value to followers
Jeff Ferguson, CEO of Internet marketing consulting firm Fang Digital Marketing, said instead of focusing on increasing follower count, companies can focus on generating quality content and followers will come on their own.

Wise added that organizations can share content that will add value to a user’s knowledge and support his or her business objectives to gain new followers.

McMahon added that organizations can leverage its existing followers and request them to recommend the business to their friends. However, she said they should not “constantly bombard” followers with requests, instead they a well-timed ask of an engaged existing follower base can be beneficial.

3. Make it easy for others to follow
Bryan Woodruff, business development manager at 360 PSG, said companies should make sure that the icon to follow on Twitter is prominently displayed on their Web site. He added that employees can also include a link to the Twitter account in their e-mail signatures.

Woodruff added that businesses should also make sure that their Twitter information is listed on social media pages and on promotional materials.

4. Participate in “trending topics”
Russell said she uses trending topics to promote the company’s tweets, for example, by tweeting about the Olympic when it trends.

She added that the company also uses popular hashtags, such as #FF which stands for “Follow Friday” to promote others’ Twitter account.

5. Follow key personalities
McMahon said businesses can follow the kind of people or organizations they hope will follow back.

Wise added businesses can retweet key influencers to gain their following and subsequent engagement.

Maintain account to prevent dropout
When a user follows the company Twitter account, Russell said she personally messages each new follower with a thank you message as well as links to the company Web site and LinkedIn account. She added that the message shows the followers that the account is real and not a bot.

What Catches Our Eye

I feel that there are many good ways to make a good blog the first being you need to have  pictures, to me that draws you in to want to read the blog. The second thing you need is a few short sentences explaining what the blog is about and depending on what it is about for example like fashion it is good to give your opinion on the topic. Third is you need to have catchy words or sayings because that makes the reader want to actually sit there and read what you have to say. People don’t like to have to sit and read a blog that is a couple of pages most people don’t have time for that so the number one goal to have a good blog is you need to make it short and sweet so it gets to the point. When I read blogs that is  what draws me in is if they have pictures that lets me to be able to see what they are talking about and for it to be short and sweet. I recently looked at a blog about valentines day and there were pictures of home made cards that helped give me ideas for cards that I can make for people for Valentines day. Other blogs I saw about Valentines day were about giving someone a small gift like giving them their favorite candy bar or a candle just something that gets them surprised and it didn’t have to cost to much. These are the kinds of blogs that I look for either to help give me ideas for holidays like Valentines day and Christmas and even Easter. I also look for blogs that can help me with fashion so I always know what the latest trends that are going on with each season. These are the types of blogs that interest me. In order to have good blog comments you have to make sure to read the person’s blog fully and be honest with your comments and you can’t make it a sentence it has to be at least a paragraph or more, so that the blogger can see the mistakes he or she has made or be able to see the things that they have done right.
